Spring is just around the corner and soon we will be out in the woods and fields targeting wild turkeys. Make sure to stay comfortable so you can spend more time hunting and increasing your chances of harvesting a turkey this spring hunting season.
Start off with a good base layer-
The weather can vary greatly during spring turkey hunts. Oftentimes days start out rather cold and then heat up throughout the day. A good fitting base layer will help keep you warm in the mornings yet breathe and keep you from overheating later in the day. Your base layer should be fitted, and not loose. Even though you want them to fit smaller than your normal clothes you still want to buy the size you would normally wear.
Finding the right footwear-
It’s really important to have the proper footwear when hunting. Wool socks are the first thing on the list. You also want a pair of hunting boots that will keep your feet dry and warm. You should consider what boots you wear based on the terrain you’ll be hunting. Find a pair that is insulated, waterproof, and most importantly, comfortable. You never know how long you’ll be walking when you’re searching for birds.
Remember to check the weather in advance-
It’s important to know what weather you’ll face throughout your hunt. During spring hunts you need to be ready for rain, wind, fog, or even possibly snow. Have a waterproof poncho in your backpack, as well as a hat with a brim. Layer your clothing for comfort. You’ll be warm in all with layers, but if the sun comes out and the temperature rises, you can always take a layer off.
This is just the beginning when it comes to preparing for you spring turkey hunt, but if you are comfortable on your hunt you will be able to spend more time getting after those gobblers. Good luck hunting!
