May Outdoor Youth of the Month Reinforces Role of Mentoring, Credits Mom For Teaching Him to Fish
(Plymouth, Minn.) — When he’s not working weekends at his uncle’s feed mill, 16-year-old Zachery Suther usually is hunting and fishing near his Bemidji, Minn., home. As the May Outdoor Youth of the Month, Suther credits several adults for mentoring his passion for the outdoors: his uncle, Joel Rohde, who bought him his first firearm and took him deer hunting; his trapshooting coach, Dave Smith; and Zach’s mother, Dawn Cook, who taught him how to fish when he was a young boy.
Suther’s step-dad, Mark Cook, nominated him for the Outdoor Youth of the Month program after seeing the high level of ethics the young hunter brought to the field on the first turkey hunt. According to the May 27 feature, the standards of excellence that earned Suther the May Outdoor Youth of the Month recognition include his successful varsity trap team participation and achievements in the youth bowhunters division in the Bemidji Archery Club.
The Outdoor Youth of the Month program is a partnership between Outdoor News and Clam Outdoors to recognize Minnesota youth in grades 7-12 whom the public believes demonstrate leadership or excellence in the outdoor pursuits including: habitat restoration efforts, archery, the shooting sports, or mentored fishing and hunting programs.
Staff from Outdoor News and Clam Outdoors selected Suther for the award. In addition to a feature in Minnesota Outdoor News, the youth also receives a prize package including $250 in merchandise and a $250 cash award from Clam and a plaque from Outdoor News. Additionally, the organization that the youth designates as having played a significant role in their development in the outdoor pursuits will also receive a $250 cash award from Clam. Suther elected to use the opportunity to encourage other youth to pursue more outdoor sports and has selected the Northland Regional Shooting Sports Complex in Beltrami County as the organization to receive the cash honorarium.
