Youths win seats to Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener through Outdoor News

Two youth anglers have landed spots to fish Saturday's 71st annual Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener through a contest offered by Outdoor News.

The Willmar Lakes Area, which includes the communities of Willmar, Spicer, and New London, is hosting this year’s fishing opener celebration, and contest winners Noah Brock-Oxner and Jacob Osmundson each will fish the opener with an adult of their choice.

The 2018 Kids Opener Contest called for youth who reside in Minnesota to submit a 50-word essay sharing why Outdoor News should choose them to fish the official fishing opener.

For 14-year-old Jacob, sharing the chance to fish in the Governor’s Opener with his mom, Kim Osmundson, was important to him. Noah's fishing companion will be his grandfather, Michael Brock, who the 10-year old from Janesville affectionately calls his “PawPaw.”

With the support of the Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Explore Minnesota, Bob FM Radio, and the Outdoor News Junior Pro Team, the foursome will enjoy complimentary accommodations as well as fishing with an area host who provides gear and tackle.

The two youths will sport new Junior Pro Team apparel – follow the hashtags  #JPTFISHING and #MNGFO2018 for event highlights. The May 18 issue of Minnesota Outdoor News also will include photos and a recap of the activities.
